The sound of chalk on a board is used to remind us (as a trope) of things we don’t like, yet it is so visceral we can all recall it instantly. By the same token the sight of a chalk written sign will recall a tender and gentler time where we were full of awe or wonder at all that we could experience. So it is by that notion that to ‘discover’ a new shop by their hand-painted blackboard advertisement that says instantly: NEW, NOW, LOVINGLY CRAFTED to varying degrees.
