Rebel > Protest > Doubt

“

I experience myself as “I” because I doubt, I protest, I rebel.

― Erich Fromm

Sane Society, 1955
Ch. 5 “Man in Capitalistic Society”

Full Quote:

I experience myself as “I” because I doubt, I protest, I rebel. Even if I submit and sense defeat, I experience myself as “I”—I, the defeated one. But if I am not aware of submitting or rebelling, if I am ruled by an anonymous authority, I lose the sense of self, I become a “one,” a part of the “It.” (p.153)
